GPA Calculator

Compute your semester or cumulative grade point average the way American high schools and colleges do: each course contributes its grade points multiplied by credit hours, divided by total attempted credits.

Add as many courses as you need, optionally fold in your previous GPA, and watch the result update live. The +/- letter scale matches the common US convention shown below the form.

How the GPA Calculator works

The calculation follows the standard method used across the US — no shortcuts, no hidden assumptions. Here is exactly what happens behind the scenes:

Formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
  • Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33 …).
  • Multiply grade points by the course credit hours.
  • Sum weighted points and divide by total credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA is good for college admissions?

For competitive US universities, aim for 3.7+ unweighted. Many state schools admit readily around 3.0–3.5. Always pair GPA with course rigor — admissions offices value challenging coursework.

Do pass/fail courses affect GPA?

At most institutions, passed pass/fail courses earn credits but no grade points, leaving GPA unchanged. Failing ones often count as an F. Exclude them here unless yours counts failures.

How is cumulative GPA calculated with previous semesters?

Enter your prior cumulative GPA and the credit hours it covered, then add this term’s courses. The calculator weights everything by credits, exactly like a registrar’s transcript audit.
